Survival Kits Wilderness

Wilderness survival kits Store survival kits in a convenient place known to all family members. Keep a smaller version of your supplies kit in the trunk of your car, at work, and at school. Keep them in airtight plastic bags, if possible. Change your stored water supply every six months so it stays fresh. Replace your stored food every six months. Ask your physician or pharmacist about storing prescription medications. Rethink your kit and family needs at least once a year.

In your pack you should have waterproof matches, space blankets (2), flint stick, knife, sharpening stone, box of ammo extra clip, pocket stove, cotton balls and wet tender, compass, whistle, Katadyn Microfilter bottle, tube tent (2), First aid items and sanitary items such as small toothbrush and travel size toothpaste. I also have high protein bars, a mess kit and dehydrated food. Enough for three days.

A small hatchet and fishing? line. Oh and an extra pair of socks in case mine get wet. You can make expedient edged weapons from wood. Use these only to puncture. Bamboo is the only wood that will hold a suitable edge. To make a knife using wood, first select a straight-grained piece of hardwood that is about 30 centimeters long and 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Fashion the blade about 15 centimeters long. Shave it down to a point. Use only the straight-grained portions of the wood. Do not use the core or pith, as it would make a weak point. Harden the point by a process known as fire hardening. If a fire is possible, dry the blade portion over the fire slowly until lightly charred.

The drier the wood, the harder the point. After lightly charring the blade portion, sharpen it on a coarse stone. If using bamboo and after fashioning the blade, remove any other wood to make the blade thinner from the inside portion of the bamboo. Removal is done this way because bamboo's hardest part is its outer layer. Keep as much of this layer as possible to ensure the hardest blade possible. When charring bamboo over a fire, char only the inside wood; do not char the outside.

You have heard about the "wind chill effect," right. Well, wind chill is an effect that only takes place when you are in the wind, so get out of it if you are cold. Also, the standard charts measure the effect of wind on exposed skin. If you are properly dressed, the evaporative effect isn't there, so the apparent temperature isn't reduced as much as the charts indicate. Tighten up the openings in your clothing!

Tea of witch hazel leaves can be used for relief from insect bites and sunburn. Witch Hazel once was a common astringent that women used as a "tightening" and refreshing face wash.

IODINE WATER PURIFICATION TABLETS   If you can find the source of water in the mountains or hills, where it actually bubbles out of the ground, you are usually safe in drinking it. If you are downstream from other animals and humans, it is best to boil water for 10-20 minutes or distill it. As a last case option, 2% iodine solution can be used. Add five drops to a quart of clear water or 10 drops to dirty water.
Chlorine-releasing compound can not be relied upon in semi-tropical and tropical areas.

Water in those regions must be sterilized either by boiling or by iodine water purification tablets containing the active ingredient Tetraglycine Hydroperiodine, These measures have been adopted as standard by the armed services of the USA.
These tablets have been proved effective against all the common water-borne bacteria. Added to water each tablet frees 8 milligrams of iodine which act as a water purification factor.

One tablet will purify one quart of water. These tablets too must be kept dry. The bottle must be recapped tightly after opening.
Step 1 Add one tablet to a quart of water in container with cap.
Step 2 Wait 3 minutes.
Step 3 Shake water thoroughly, allowing a little water to leak out and disinfect the screw threads before tightening the cap.
Step 4 Wait 10 minutes before drinking or adding beverage powders and if water is very cold, wait 20 minutes.
Step 5 If water contains decaying vegetation or is murky and discolored, use 2 tablets for every one quart.
Step 6 Make certain that the iodine disinfects any part of the container which will come in contact with your lips.
