You need to leave a vehicle at the
starting point and at the end of the trip. A map of the area is a great
help. Make sure you are not crossing any private property . Some land owners
that own land on both sides of the water might not want you drift fishing
through their property. The best thing about this is all you need to do is
paddle along with the current.
Take plenty of food and drinks. Make sure to take a good selection of fish bait. I have caught some very
nice smallmouth bass on float fishing trips. The best bait I have found is
drifting a night crawler along the edges of the ripples and swifter water.
Use a small split shot a couple feet up from the hook , just hook the worm a
couple times. Cast the worm up stream and let it bump along the bottom
through the ripples. Softcraws or crawdads are great to use ,make sure you
keep the cool and out of the sun.
If you are luck enough to have caught some fish. Find a nice spot clean
the fish and get them ready to cook. You can prepare a coating mix of
cornmeal, flour, salt and pepper for the fish and put it in a large sandwich
bag at home. Put the fish fillets in shake it up and the fish are coated.
If you have a small propane grill it is great for cooking the fish. Cook the
fish anyway you like them its up to you. Remember do not leave any trash
pick it up and haul it out with you.
You should get your fishing gear ready for spring and summer bass or pan
fishing Bass fishing is on the way in the north its still cold so now is the
time to get your fishing gear ready. Get your fishing rods and tackle boxes
out and start to get them in shape for the upcoming bass fishing season.
Check your fishing line for wear and tear and replace it with new fishing
line. Your fishing reels will need some attention such as cleaning and
oiling. Take everything out of your fishing tackle box and clean it out.I
like to line the compartments with cork in keeps the fishing lures from
scratching up the tackle box. There are many different inserts that you can
get to keep your tackle box clean and neat.
Check the hooks on your fishing lures and make sure they are still
sharp. Look at your fishing baits to make sure they are not broken. If you
use a fish attractant make sure its not out of date some baits that are
preserved have a out of date printed on the jar.
Take a look at your fishing rods and make sure the eyelets are not broken
or have any nicks this can cause the line to break and you could loose a big
bass.
If you have kids that are old enough to fish now is the time to have them
get their fishing gear out and get it ready for spring bass fishing
You can sit down with them now and make plans for your first fishing
trip. Get out your topo maps and start planning where you want to go. Fishing
is also a great way to your family closer together and remember to be
patient with young anglers. Remember you have to get a fishing license,
check your local state department of natural resources to see the age limits
for young fishermen. Most states are free under a certain age to fish with an
adult.
Get your fishing rigs ready if you use Texas rig you can use a bullet
shaped slip sinker, and attach it to the line so that the smallest part of
the weight is facing upwards. Use a worm hook and a trailer of your choice.
The same is true for Carolina rigs and other bass fishing baits and use a
bait fish scent on the trailers.
I try and stay with the fishing baits that I am use to fishing, there are
just to many baits for sale and it can become overwhelming so just buy a few
and learn how to fish them inside and out.
If you are fishing with your kids a bobber and worm work great especially if
the lake or river is full of pan fish. Remember kids get bored easily so you
must be patient with them, its about the fun and being with your family that
counts.
Learn to fish the Hula Popper topwater bait when bass fishing. Fishermen
like to use topwaters for bass in the spring and summer., When it is sunny
and hot outside bass will to move to cover., They have had great success
fishing for largemouth bass with a Hula Popper and a Jitterbug. They cast
them near lily pads and let is sit for a minute or so. You need to let the
rings from the splash go away before you start to real it in. Just use a
quick popping motion and it will entice bass to strike.
Your top water bass bait color should try and match the area you
are fishing. Most use a yellow
Hula Popper and green Jitterbug around
lily pads and they work great.
Make sure you keep your hooks sharp. If you notice that you are getting
bites but no hook set try adding a trailer hook.
Topwater bass baits also work great around logs and near spawning beds.
Bass will stay close to a log on the shade side if the sun is high and
bright. Make you cast parallel to the log and slowly pop it along the side of
the log. Make sue to let it sit for a few seconds this usually drives bass
crazy and they will strike.
Using your depth finder find a drop off near structure like logs and
trees. This is a great place to fish top water bass baits for suspended large
mouth bass. The clearer the water the better and especially at night when
bass tend to move more looking for something to eat. If you have weed beds
drift along the outside of the beds casting just into the weed beds and pop
your topwater baits out of the weeds.
Roland Martin, the most successful
bass fisherman in history in terms of
tournaments won, is a prolific source of bass fishing wisdom and sure-fire bassing tips. Both practical and discursive, Martin not only discusses why
bass strike, how to use live bait, plugs, and spinners, tricks for night
fishing, and how to fish logs, weeds, rocks, and trees; he also recounts how
he once fished five rods at once during a school feeding frenzy, and how
fellow legend Bill Dance
charmed him out of a spinnerbait and beat him with
it in a tournament. Full of information and great stories, Roland Martin's
101 Bass-Catching Secrets is the best guide available to help fishermen land
more bass, and a revealing look at the exciting world of professional
